Fiat Grace and the leaven of tolerated sin: Part 2 of 5 Continuing from "The P.O.P.E. in the Pulpit"

Updated: 9 hours ago

II. The Deception of "Fiat Grace" (see part 1)

Alongside this drift away from truth comes a second deception: what I call Fiat Grace. Just as fiat currency

is money without gold backing, fiat grace is forgiveness without repentance.

It’s the attempt to issue spiritual “credit” where no transformation has occurred. However, Scripture warns that "God is not mocked" (Galatians 6:7). When we offer a grace that requires nothing, we don't create a sanctuary; we create a vacuum where holiness used to be. As Jude warned, some turn the grace of our God into "sensuality" (Jude 1:4).

By employing a fiat grace to keep the pews full, leadership triggers a spiritual inflationary spiral. Pastors often fail to factor in the hidden "interest" of this spending as it spins out of control. We must realize that tolerated sin is never static; it is leaven. Just as leaven causes bread to puff up with air, this compromise creates "spiritual empty carb-laden grace cakes." They look substantial and "rise" quickly in the heat of a cultural moment, but they lack the dense, life-sustaining weight of the Bread of Life. Paul didn’t say leaven might spread; he said it "leavens the whole lump" (1 Corinthians 5:6).

When we invite the enemy's influence into our fellowship through compromise, we aren't just "playing"; we are permitting a slow-acting poison to dim the very lampstand Christ placed in our midst. This compromise carries a heavy price: first, a hardening of hearts, where constant exposure to tolerated sin desensitizes the conscience until the church stops feeling the conviction of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 3:13).

" When we offer a grace that requires nothing, we don't create a sanctuary; we create a vacuum where holiness used to be. "

Next comes a loss of witness; when the church mirrors the world’s corruption, it loses its "saltiness" (Matthew 5:13), offering no reason for the lost to seek a Christ who looks exactly like the "party" they are trying to leave. Finally, by removing the hedge of holiness, leaders create a spiritual vulnerability that invites "ravenous wolves" to exploit the flock (Matthew 7:15). We are stewards of a flock entrusted to us by God, and we will eventually give an account for whether we fed them the Truth or merely comfortable, puffed-up illusions that leave the building brightly lit but the spirit utterly dark.

What's Next in Part 3 ? The Sadducee's Gambit. Jesus' absolute "whosoever" command on marriage (Luke 16:18 ) meets modern evasion tactics; exceptions clauses, hermeneutical gymnastics, and Sadducee-style strawmen that frames God's design as absurd. When trauma cases become excuses to rewrite Scripture , are we trusting God's power.. or our own compassion?
