A broad nationwide coalition of Christian conservative organizations has officially launched a campaign aimed at overturning the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the ruling that established same-sex marriage as a constitutional right in all 50 states. The movement, branded the “Greater Than” campaign, is led by the advocacy group Them Before Us and unites more than 40 state and national organizations in an effort to mobilize churches, policymakers, and grassroots activists toward restoring what they describe as the “biblical and natural” definition of marriage between one man and one woman.
At the heart of the campaign’s messaging is the claim that children should come first in any conversation about family and marriage. Organizers argue that redefining marriage in 2015 did more than change adult rights - it redefined parenthood in ways they believe harm children and undermine “God-ordained family structure.”
The coalition includes well-known conservative and faith-based groups such as Focus on the Family, Live Action, Word on Fire, American Family Association, Citizens for Renewing America, Family Research Council, and numerous state-level social-policy groups. Public figures like pro-life activist Lila Rose, talk-show host Steve Deace, and commentator Allie Beth Stuckey have publicly supported the campaign’s launch. | ![]() |
Campaign Framework and Strategy
According to organizers, Greater Than rests on a three-part strategy:
Legal and Judicial Advocacy - Push for legal challenges and court cases that could bring Obergefell back before the Supreme Court.
Cultural Persuasion - Shift public opinion by reframing marriage policy as primarily about children’s well-being rather than adult equality.
Church Mobilization - Equip Christian congregations to support legislation and messaging that aligns with the campaign’s view of marriage and family.
Greater Than leaders argue that since the 2015 decision, parenthood has been treated as replaceable and that children are ordinated by “nature and by God” to have both a mother and a father. This idea is central to the campaign’s slogan: “children are greater than adult desires.”
Political and Cultural Context
The Obergefell v. Hodges decision marked a profound shift in United States constitutional law, finding that the 14th Amendment’s due process and equal protection clauses guarantee the right of same-sex couples to marry. Since that 5-4 ruling, same-sex marriage has broad public support, and numerous legal scholars maintain that Obergefell is constitutionally sound and unlikely to be overturned without significant shifts in the Court’s composition and broader legal arguments.
Opponents of the campaign argue that the effort revives arguments previously rejected by the judiciary and risks undermining constitutional equality protections. Civil-rights advocates also dispute claims that same-sex families harm children and note that extensive research shows children raised by same-sex parents fare just as well on key developmental outcomes.
Still, organizers of Greater Than believe that public policy should return to centering the biological and complementary roles of both a mother and a father - a theme reflected in both their legal arguments and faith-based language.
Faith, Scripture, and Family Values
For many campaign supporters, the drive to overturn Obergefell is rooted deeply in religious conviction. They frequently invoke scripture on the centrality of family and God's design for human relationships. The KJB provides verses that many in this movement point to when grounding their perspective:
From the Old Testament:
“It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” - Genesis 2:18
This verse is commonly cited in discussions about the complementary nature of male and female partnership in marriage.
From the Apocrypha:
“And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lust but uprightly: therefore mercifully ordain that we may become aged together.” - Tobit 8:6-7
Though outside the Protestant canon, this verse emphasizes mutual duties within marriage and it being life long and specifically to protect against adultery and fornication as described in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 7, which the campaign’s advocates see as integral to child-raising and family stability, without encouraging blended or mixed families.
From the New Testament:
“And, behold, they are two in one flesh. So then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” - Mark 10:8-9
This passage is often referenced in Christian marital teaching as reflecting God’s intention for lifelong unions.
What’s Ahead
Whether the Greater Than campaign will significantly influence legal or cultural shifts in the United States remains uncertain. With same-sex marriage deeply woven into the civil-rights landscape and public opinion broadly supportive, legal challenges face formidable hurdles. Yet the launch of this coordinated effort signals a renewed push by a well-organized coalition to align public policy with their definition of family structures - and to bring their vision back before the courts and the public.
